Learn about the apocalyptic events that constantly take place on the surface of the sun and hear what human society can do to avert the collision of the earth with asteroids.
Storm-Chasing on the Sun
Laura May-Abron
(Astronomer & Science Communicator - Griffith Observatory)
"Our sun isn't just a plain hot ball of gas, it has a lot going on! From spots and filaments, to storms and even planet-sized
tornadoes. As the peak of our solar cycle approaches, come discover what hundreds of years of observation have taught us about our closest star and the mysteries we have yet to unravel."

Saving the Earth from Killer Asteroids
Bryce Bolin
(Postdoctoral Researcher - NASA)
"Thousands of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, wildfires, and flash
floods, occur globally each day, sadly leaving the loss of life and economic
damage in their wake. In this talk, I will discuss one of the rarest and
potentially most destructive natural disasters: an impact from an asteroid or a
comet. I will discuss the key characteristics that make impacts from asteroids
a naturally occurring phenomenon and the risks they pose, separating fact from
fiction. Lastly, I will talk about how they can be taken care of. While
extremely unlikely in our human lifetimes, impact prevention is 100% attainable
with current modern-day technology, with recent advancements making leaps and
bounds in the search for hazardous asteroids and the minimization of their
threat to humankind."
