Join us for an evening where we will learn why many simple daily activities are not yet automated and where we will marvel at the incredible sensitivity of the hair cells in our ears to register sounds.
Where’s my robot butler? Why modern artificial intelligence can paint pictures, write essays, and make movies, but still can’t wash the dishes
Vince Kurtz
(Postdoctoral Researcher - CalTech)
"As a roboticist at Caltech, I spend a lot of time trying to get robots to perform
seemingly simple tasks: walking, picking things up, moving stuff around. In
this presentation, I’ll talk about why these elementary tasks are difficult,
interesting, and worthwhile. We’ll discuss how robots walk, why doing a
backflip is actually easier than tying your shoes, and will start to separate
the facts of artificial intelligence from marketing hype."

Hear me out: Mechanical application in the ear
Martin Toderi
(Postdoctoral Researcher - UCLA)
Our inner ear houses around 15000 cells, responsible for conveying mechanical inputs due to sound vibration to our brain.
This process involves several mechanisms studied in physics, biology and neuroscience. We will talk about how we study this type of cell, their role, and the incredible properties they exhibit, which make them one of the most exquisite detectors in nature.
