From Harm to Healing: Rethinking Justice in Our Communities

What is transitional justice? From the Nuremberg trials against the Nazis to “defunding the police” academics, policymakers, and activists have sought to understand what to do with those who commit widespread acts of political violence, how to help their victims, and how to make sure these kinds of acts never happen again. This talk will cover all the basics: (1) what transitional justice is, with a focus on the policies we’ve come to call the “transitional justice toolkit,” (2) where we’ve seen it used before, and (3) what people hope to achieve when they implement it.

What happens to families when a parent is incarcerated—and what helps? This talk explores how separation affects relationships between parents and children, and why staying connected can be so challenging yet so important. We’ll look at what families experience during this time, what kinds of support can make a difference, and how approaches like diversion can prevent family separation in the first place.
