Step into the hidden rhythms of nature, where forest soundscapes reveal the richness of life and unexpected outbreaks remind us how closely species are connected. From listening to ecosystems to understanding how viruses like bird flu jump between hosts, this event explores the delicate balance between biodiversity, animal health, and our own.
Outbreak: How viruses jump species and start pandemics
Thomas Friedrich
(Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison)
In spring 2024 farmers and veterinarians in Texas noticed something wrong. Dairy cattle suddenly appeared ill and their milk production dropped dramatically. The cause turned out to be H5N1 avian influenza virus--bird flu--something we did not think could infect cattle. This unprecedented outbreak caused alarm because pandemics can start when viruses jump into new species. Luckily this outbreak has not led to a pandemic. In my talk I will explain how scientists use outbreaks like this to understand how viruses jump species, adapt, and sometimes cause pandemics.
